The DualSense is one of the best-feeling controllers ever made — and one of the most drift-prone. The same potentiometer modules that cause Xbox stick drift live inside the DualSense, and they wear out the same way. After 100–300 hours of heavy use, the camera starts pulling slightly to one side and your character won't stand still.
Sony has been sued repeatedly over drift since 2021. The Verge has a good summary of the legal history. Here's what you can actually do about it.
Step 1: Reset the Controller First
Sometimes "drift" is just a software pairing issue. Locate the small reset button in the tiny hole on the back of the DualSense (next to the Sony logo). Push a paperclip in for 5 seconds, then re-pair via USB cable. About 1 in 10 reported drift cases is fixed by this single step.
Step 2: The Cleaning Fix
- Power off the controller and unplug it.
- Push the drifting stick to one extreme, then spray compressed air (held upright) into the exposed gap at the base for 2–3 seconds.
- Rotate the stick fully a few times. Repeat from each direction.
- If air alone doesn't fix it, drop 2–3 drops of 90%+ isopropyl alcohol into the same gap, then work the stick in full circles for 60 seconds.
- Let it dry for 10 minutes before reconnecting.
Step 3: Calibrate Out the Residual Drift
The PS5 doesn't expose a dead-zone slider in the system menu, but Settings → Accessories → Controllers → Adjust Stick Sensitivity can help. On PC, Steam Input's dead-zone settings work brilliantly with a DualSense. Our Windows calibration guide walks through the built-in tool too.
Step 4: Free Repair Through Sony
Sony quietly offers free DualSense drift repair in many regions, even outside the standard warranty period. Start at PlayStation Support and request a hardware repair for "stick drift". US customers in particular have reported successful no-cost repairs even months past warranty.
Step 5: Replace the Stick Modules Yourself
Out of warranty and comfortable with electronics? Replacement Alps stick modules for the DualSense are widely available for under $10 a pair. iFixit publishes a DualSense teardown with photos. Plan for an hour the first time. You'll need a Phillips #00 driver, a spudger, and a soldering iron.
The Long-Term Fix: Hall-Effect Pads
Hall-effect sticks use magnets instead of physical contacts and are immune to drift. The DualSense Edge does not have them yet, but several third-party PS5-compatible pads do. The 8BitDo Ultimate (PS edition), Nacon Revolution X, and GameSir Cyclone Pro all offer Hall sticks at fair prices. If drift returns to your DualSense within a year, this is the right next step.
FAQ
Is DualSense drift covered under PS5 warranty?
Yes, within the 1-year warranty Sony will repair or replace it free. Many users have also got free out-of-warranty repairs by contacting PlayStation Support and citing drift.
Can I just calibrate it instead of fixing the hardware?
For mild drift, yes — increasing the dead zone in the PS5 accessibility settings or via Steam Input on PC is enough. But the wear keeps progressing, so it's a stop-gap, not a permanent fix.
Does the DualSense Edge have the same drift problem?
Yes. The Edge has swappable stick modules, which makes self-repair easier (no soldering), but the underlying potentiometer technology is the same.
Why does my DualSense vibrate constantly?
That's usually a different issue — see our controller rumble guide, but constant rumble often points to a damaged haptic coil or a firmware glitch.
